I rarely share much about my family on here ... mostly because I don't want to share the same things on both blogs. But I must share this because it was a very special moment for me.
My grandmother, who is 87 years old, has been very sick with heart issues for a while, and has been in the hospital for a few weeks and just recently had surgery to help her heart condition. Before the surgery, she was dying, during the surgery the doctors thought she had died, but she came out of surgery alive and doing very well considering! God is good!
Before she was transferred to the hospital that did her surgery, she did a lot of waiting at one of our smaller local hospitals, and I was able to go and visit her alone, without any distraction from kids and such. Well, my mom had been telling her all about the things I've been creating recently beyond just bows and skirts and my grandmother was very proud.
When I went to go see her, she asked me about the stuff I've been making and I told her about the ruffled bolero jacket, the pants, the bow tie, and of course, all the new patterns and things I have in the works.
I knew she would greatly appreciate all of this because she is an excellent seamstress herself, and was taught by her mother. My grandmother had 17 children, all of whom are still alive and well, my grandparents were dairy farmers for most of their lives until about the time I was born (31 years ago). They lived on a modest income, so my grandmother and her mother made most of her children's clothing, doll clothes for the girls at Christmas time and my grandmother in recent years even made her own dresses. A few of my aunts picked up the sewing ability, and a few of us granddaughters were able to pick it up ... it must be in the genes!
So, when I was there with my Avo (grandmother in Portuguese ... pronounced uh-vah), we were talking about all the sewing I've been doing and when she was done, she told me "You remind me of my mother. You are just like her."
I think that was the best compliment I've ever received. My Bis Avo (great-grandmother) was an amazing woman. Born in 1901 and lived until she was 96 1/2! She had 8 children and between all of them had hundreds (literally) of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren in her lifetime alone. She was one of the most devoted, loving, kind, Godly women I've ever known. I may not be exactly like her, but I am honored and proud that my grandmother thinks I am anything like her!
